How to See Who Doesn't Follow You Back on Instagram

Showing a stylized Instagram interface with the text 'Not Following Back', the number 254, and a red 'Unfollow' button, with a smiling swedish blonde woman pointing towards it.

Wondering who you're following that isn't following you back? Or maybe you want to check someone else's profile and see who they follow that doesn't follow them in return. Either way, Instagram doesn't make this easy. There's no built-in filter, no "not following back" tab, nothing. You'd have to go through every single account manually.

This guide shows you how to actually check, on your own profile or anyone else's public account, without going through hundreds of profiles one by one.

Does Instagram Show Who Doesn't Follow You Back?

No. Instagram shows you a followers list and a following list, but it doesn't compare them. There's no native way to filter by "not following back" or "mutual" inside the app.

The only thing Instagram shows is a small "Follows you" label when you open someone's profile while logged in. That's it. To find everyone who doesn't follow you back, you'd have to open every single profile in your following list and check manually, which isn't realistic if you follow more than a handful of people.

There's another problem that's less obvious: Instagram doesn't show follower or following lists in any meaningful order. The list you see is algorithmic, meaning Instagram decides the order based on factors it doesn't explain. Someone you followed last week might appear hundreds of positions down. Someone who just started following you might be buried completely.

InstaRadar sorts followers and following lists chronologically, most recent first, so you always know what's new. And with the filter features, you can go a step further and see exactly who is and isn't following back.

How to Check on Your Own Profile

Go to InstaRadar, create an account, enter your username, and open the Followers or Following tab. From there you can filter by Not followed back to see exactly who you follow that hasn't followed you back, and who follows you that you haven't followed back in return.

A few things worth knowing:

The search works better than Instagram's. Instagram's own follower search is unreliable. On many accounts it doesn't return results at all, or it misses accounts that are clearly there. InstaRadar's search goes through the full list reliably, so if you're looking for a specific name you'll actually find them.

You can sort by oldest first. By default the list shows most recent followers first. But if you want to see who's been following you the longest, or who you followed first, you can flip the sort order. Useful if you're doing a proper audit rather than just checking recent activity.

How to Check on Someone Else's Profile

This is where it gets interesting, and where InstaRadar does something most tools don't.

You can enter anyone's public username, not just your own, and run the same check. Want to see who your boyfriend follows that doesn't follow him back? Who your ex is following that isn't following them in return? Which of your crush's followers actually get a follow back from them?

Same process: enter the username, open the Following tab, apply the Not followed back filter.

The account owner has no idea you checked. It works on any public Instagram profile, private accounts aren't accessible, same as anywhere else.

What the Filters Actually Show

Not followed back means accounts they follow that don't follow them back. One-sided follows on their end.

Not following back means accounts that follow them but they don't follow back. One-sided follows coming in.

Mutual means both sides follow each other.

All three filters work the same way whether you're looking at your own profile or someone else's.

Why Instagram's Built-In Search Often Doesn't Work

If you've ever tried searching inside someone's followers list on Instagram, you've probably noticed it's hit or miss. Sometimes it works fine. Often it returns nothing, or only shows a partial result, even when you're typing the exact username.

This seems to depend on account size, account type, and factors Instagram hasn't publicly explained. It's been a known issue for years and Instagram hasn't fixed it.

InstaRadar loads the full follower and following list and runs the search on that data directly, which is why it returns accurate results regardless of account size or type.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the person tell if I check their followers on InstaRadar?

No. InstaRadar retrieves public profile data without logging into Instagram. The account owner receives no notification and there's no trace that you looked.

Does this work on private accounts?

No. Private accounts don't expose their follower or following lists publicly, so no tool can access that data. InstaRadar works on any public profile.

What plan do I need for the Not followed back filter?

The filter is available on the Follower Lookup add-on, Basic, and Pro plans. The free version lets you browse followers and following lists but without filtering. See all plans β†’

What if the follower count shown doesn't match Instagram?

Instagram's displayed follower count sometimes includes inactive or ghost accounts that don't show up in the actual list. Minor differences are normal and not an InstaRadar issue.

Can I search for a specific person in someone's followers list?

Yes. Use the search bar inside the Followers or Following tab on InstaRadar. It's more reliable than Instagram's own search, which often returns incomplete results depending on the account.
