New 🀩 Mutual Followers available! See who they follow back

Can You See If Two People Follow Each Other on Instagram?

A graphic of four stick figures holding hands and walking in a single file line. The leading figure on the right is a purple-pink gradient, and the others are white, against a black background. The image represents the concept of connected users, mutual followers, or a network of people who follow each other on a social media platform like Instagram.

You have a specific question. Not "who does he follow in general" but something more precise: do these two people follow each other? Yes or no.

Maybe you noticed your boyfriend recently followed someone. Now you want to know if she follows him back. Or maybe you already know they follow each other and you want to understand when that connection started. Either way you're not looking for a long list. You're looking for one answer.

Instagram doesn't give you a straightforward way to find it. But it is possible to check any public profile anonymously.

What Instagram Shows Natively

If you open someone's profile while logged into your own Instagram account, you might see a small line under their bio that says "Followed by name and others." That shows mutual connections between you and that profile, meaning people you both follow. It does not show whether two other specific people follow each other.

There is no built-in feature to check whether person A and person B follow each other unless you are one of the two people involved. Instagram simply does not offer that view.

How to Actually Check

Go to InstaRadar, enter the username of the profile you want to investigate, and open the Following tab. Apply the Mutual filter to see everyone that profile follows who also follows them back.

Then use the search bar inside that filtered list to search for the specific person you have in mind.

If they appear in the results, the two accounts follow each other. If they don't appear, they don't.

When Did They Start Following Each Other?

This is usually the follow-up question once you have confirmed the connection exists.

InstaRadar shows the mutual list sorted chronologically, most recent first. So if the person you searched for appears near the top of the list, the mutual connection is recent. If they appear further down, it has been there for a while.

This context matters. A mutual connection that appeared last week means something different than one that has existed for two years.

If you want to know the exact date the follow happened, that requires tracking. Once you add a profile to your InstaRadar tracking list, it monitors the account going forward and logs the exact date of any new follows, unfollows, or new mutual connections as they happen. See all plans β†’

What This Does and Doesn't Tell You

Finding a mutual connection between two people tells you they follow each other. It does not tell you how well they know each other, whether they have ever spoken, or what the nature of the relationship is.

What it does tell you is that both people made a deliberate choice to follow the other. On a public account anyone can follow anyone, but following back is a choice. A mutual connection on Instagram is at minimum an acknowledgment that both parties are aware of each other and chose to stay connected.

Whether that means anything in your specific situation is something only you can judge. But at least you are working with actual information rather than suspicion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can they tell if I check this on InstaRadar?

No. InstaRadar retrieves public profile data without logging into Instagram. Neither account receives any notification and there is no trace that you looked.

What if one of the accounts is private?

It depends on which account is private. If the profile you are investigating on InstaRadar is public, you can still see their follower and following lists, including accounts that are private. A private account can show up in someone's follower or following list, you just won't be able to open that private profile separately on InstaRadar to investigate it further. If the main profile you are checking is private, the follower and following lists are not accessible at all.

What if I search for someone inside the mutual list and they don't show up?

It means they don't follow each other, or one of them has blocked the other which would remove the connection entirely.

Can I check this without creating an account on InstaRadar?

You can browse follower and following lists on InstaRadar without an account. The Mutual filter requires a plan. See all plans β†’

What if the follower list is very large? Will the search still work?

InstaRadar currently loads up to 3,000 followers and following, and we are continuously increasing that limit. Instagram's own search inside follower lists is unreliable and often returns nothing regardless of account size. InstaRadar's search works across the full loaded list.
